When discussing IPv4 resources, the terms Legacy and Non-Legacy are often used, but what do they actually mean?
Legacy IPv4:
Allocated before the current RIR contractual framework was introduced.
Often held by organizations that received address space in the early days of the Internet.
Non-Legacy IPv4:
Allocated under today’s RIR policies and registration agreements.
Governed by the current rules of the relevant Regional Internet Registry.
One important point: Legacy doesn’t automatically mean better, and Non-Legacy doesn’t mean less valuable. The right choice depends on your organization’s technical, operational, and business requirements.
